What are magnetic couplings and magnetic gears?
2026/05/07
Magnetic couplings and magnetic gears are "non-contact power transmission devices" that utilize the attractive and repulsive forces of magnets to transmit power.
There are various benefits to using "contactless" power transmission based on magnetic force.

"Structure and Function" of Magnetic Couplings and Magnetic Gears
Structure
Magnetic products generally feature a "multipolar" structure in which the north and south poles are magnetized alternately. This structure enables rotational transmission by utilizing the "attraction" between opposite poles and the "repulsion" between like poles.
Role
Magnetic couplings and magnetic gears can perform functions such as "rotary transmission" and "converting rotary motion into linear motion"—tasks traditionally handled by conventional couplings, gears, and ball screw mechanisms—without physical contact.

"Case Studies: Solving Challenges with Magnetic Couplings and Magnetic Gears"
Magnetic products are the perfect solution for anyone facing this kind of problem.
1. I want to transmit rotational motion through a partition (I want to eliminate the seal)
[Example of Use] Cleanroom Equipment (Air Conditioning Fan)
"Air or liquid keeps leaking even after sealing..." "I want to improve the seal or vacuum level!" If this sounds like you, we have the solution! With bulkhead transmission, there's no need to drill holes in your equipment—it's an easy fix!

2. Frequent removal and maintenance of parts
[Example of Use] Food Mixer
Magnetic couplings make it easy to attach and detach components, simplifying equipment changeovers and maintenance! They are ideal for food processing machinery that requires frequent cleaning and for equipment used in processes with frequent changeovers!

3. I want to reduce vibration and noise
[Examples of Use] Conveying Equipment / Conveyors
Non-contact magnetic gears can also eliminate the "minute vibrations" and "operating noise" typically associated with mechanical gears! Because they produce minimal vibration and the gears do not wear out, they are ideal for applications such as the transport of precision equipment!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Magnetic Couplings and Magnetic Gears
Q1. Do you demagnetize it?
The material loses approximately 0.1% of its magnetic properties per year.
Q2. Does magnetic flux leakage affect nearby equipment?
If you stay at least 50 mm away from the magnet, there will be virtually no effect. We also offer magnetic field analysis services, so please feel free to contact us.
Q3. Does magnetic force vary depending on the operating temperature?
The maximum transmission torque listed on our website is based on data measured at room temperature. Torque decreases gradually as the temperature rises. Please contact us if you plan to use this product in high-temperature environments.
Q4. Are there any points to keep in mind during assembly?
Please note the following points during assembly.
① Insert a "non-magnetic, high-rigidity spacer with high sliding properties" between the products before securing them to the shaft. *Please remove the spacer before use.
② If the products become magnetically attached to each other, small-sized units can be separated by applying force in the radial direction. However, for large-sized units, do not attempt to force them apart; please contact us instead.
*If you choose to perform this operation yourself, please exercise extreme caution to avoid injury. (Not recommended)
③ Please note that due to the product’s strong magnetic force, it may cause malfunctions in precision equipment worn by the operator.
Q5. Does the transmitted torque vary depending on the size of the gap during installation?
The transmitted torque decreases as the air gap widens and increases as it narrows. When designing your system, please check the maximum torque for each air gap. Since the maximum torque (breakaway torque) is adjustable, this product can also be considered for use as an overload protection device.
*The above is just one example from the CP series. Please check the product page for information on other series.
